How to Install a Canon PIXMA G5050 Driver Printer

IJ Canon PIXMA G5050 Setup– In recent years there have been several significant trends in technological printing technology, but as we recently reported, the traditional business model for office printing has started to change, reflecting the increased focus on running costs and ecological Sustainability.

Epson started a trend a few years ago, with its range of EcoTank printers. These printers no longer use expensive ink cartridges, replacing them with large internal ink tanks. This new design means that the initial purchase price of the EcoTank printer is greater than the conventional inkjet printer manuals. However, internal ink cartridges can be easily replended using low recyclable bottles, which drastically reduces running costs and total cost of ownership (TCO) throughout the printer’s life span. And now Canon has joined the crowd “Low-TCO ” with its own range of MegaTank printers.

Pricing and options
There are several models in Canon’s MegaTank range, starting from PIXMA G1510, which costs £132.50 (ex. VAT; £159 Inc. VAT or $179.99) and is designed as an affordable home printer. Two top-notch models–PIXMA G5050 and G6050–are focused on small businesses, home offices and traders who need a reliable printer for everyday use.

PIXMA G5050, reviewed here, is one function color manuals inkjet printer, price on £191.65 (ex. VAT; £229.99 Inc. VAT), while G6050 is a multi-function alternative, equipped with a scanner/copier unit, which costs £249.99 (ex. VAT; £299.99 Inc. VAT). And, for offices that require only black and white printing for letters and other text documents, there is a monocetic model called GM2050–although, somewhat odd, that has the same price as G5050 of four colors (and does not support Macs, as well as other models in the range).

Options for American customers are more limited, with a smaller range of MegaTank printers that have only recently become available for pre-order. MegaTank printers also seem to have different models of numbers in the United States, with G5020 and G6020 providing similar features to their British counterparts, and prices of $250 and $300 respectively.

Features and design
The need for home of large internal ink cartridges means that G5050 is somewhat more cumbersome than conventional inkjet printer manuals. It measures the whole 403mm wide and 369mm deep, though without the top-mounted scanner multi-function G6050 It just stands 166mm high. It is not the kind of printer that can just sit on the shelf, and weigh in 6.5 kg, you will need a fairly robust table to stand it on.

The initial setup process is also a little more complex than simply inserting a set of cartridges into a traditional inkjet printer, as you need to pour four bottles of ink manually into their separate containers located on the right and left side of the printer. Fortunately, Canon designed the bottles with a small nozzle that fits into the inlet valve on each tank, reducing the risk of spillage. Still, you might still feel safer with the old newspaper put on the table just in case.

In addition to ink cartridges, G5050 is a fairly conventional inkjet printer, although it boasts a useful set of features for office use. It provides a resolution of 4800 to 1200dpi for printing, with USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as Ethernet for wired office network. The main paper tray on the front has 250-sheets of A4 paper, while the back tray contains additional 100 sheets of A4 or other types of paper such as glossy photo paper or envelopes, so you can select different media while still sitting at your table. The printer supports automatic bidirectional (duplex) printing, with AirPrint for Apple iOS devices, Google Cloud Print and Canon’s PRINT app for Android. One obvious flaw is the scanner/copier although, as mentioned above, the more expensive G6050 model adds a 1200-by-2400dpi scanner to users who prefer a multi-function printer to your office.

Running costs
The initial purchase price of £230 (INC. VAT) is relatively high for the manuals inkjet printer, but, of course, Canon argues that the overcharging range of MegaTank offers much lower running costs.

Like Epson, Canon includes a set of bottled ink with its full-color printers, with G5050 including three bottles of black that should deliver 18,000 pages for Monochonian Press. There is also one set of colored ink–one bottle for each of the cyan, Magenta and yellow–for the estimated 7,700 pages of colored documents. This works on less than 1p per page while using this initial ink set, which is very profitable even for regular monochontine printing. It could easily cost hundreds of kilograms to print that many pages when using conventional cartridge inks, so G5050 will surely earn its keep if you need a printer for regular, everyday use.

Canon was strangely shy about the cost of replacement ink, which was not helpful, given that it is USP for the entire MegaTank range. However, the cost of ink from traders on multiple sides indicates that black ink bottles will cost around £10.40 (ex. VAT; £12.50 Inc. VAT), and three CMY inks cost £7.16 (ex. VAT; £8.49 Inc. VAT) each.

This is done at 0.2 p per page for monoptinic printing and 0.4 p per page for color–similar to running the Epsonian EcoTank printer and far cheaper than using conventional ink cartridges.

Quality and performance
These costs are certainly attractive, although, like Epson’s early EcoTank models, Canon MegaTank printers offer relatively modest print speeds. Canon quotes a speed of 13 ‘ IPM ‘ for a monotime printing (referring to “images per minute “, not pages per minute or ppm) and 6.8 IPM for color printing. Printing printing has proven to be quite respectable, with our selection of text PDFS and Word documents reaching speeds of 12ppm, which should be perfectly appropriate for most small offices. However, documents that combine graphics of text and colors have fallen to a more modest 4.5 ppm. And while Canon quotes the speed of just 37 seconds for 10-by-15cm (postcard) photo graphics, our photo tests are pretty leisurely 90 seconds.

Still, we couldn’t blame the quality of the G5050 print. Canon black ink based on pigment provides a crisp, smooth text that can give a laser printer a run for your money. Color graphics are also good, and while photo printing is relatively slow, our test photos were bright and finely detailed, so that G5050 can safely turn the hand on presentations or marketing materials when needed.

Conclusions
The relatively high starting price of purchasing PIXMA G5050 can distract some users, but bottled inks included in the price still provide very good value for money. These inks can last for several years in many small offices before you have to buy your first set of replacements. G5050 also provides very good quality for text, graphics and photo output, although the relatively modest print speed means that it will not be ideal for busy offices requiring a lot of color printing. But if you work in a small office or retail location that needs a working horse printer for primarily text documents, G5050 will quickly earn your keep.
